Rayagada

Rayagada is a tribal inhabited district of Orissa, where meadows, forests, waterfalls and terraced valleys, are inhabitated by colourful and ethnic tribal communities. The tribal communities with their sub-tribes, who are found in different levels of development depending upon their assimilation with the mainstream or modern communities.

The people of the district show unity in diversity of races, languages and culture. The tribes living in the district possess dissimilar economics ranging from food gathering to settled cultivation. Their languages/dialects, societies and culture show inter-societal/cultural variations because of the persistence of ethnic mosaic formed by communities belonging to various tribal groups.

There are many tribal groups living here like,Dongaria Kondha, Soura, Bonda, Koya, Paraja, Lanjia Durua etc. In the ethno- cultural map of Odisha, two tribes stand out quite prominently for their primitiveness and continuing ethnic and cultural identity, the Kandhasand the Souras.
