Velavadar, also known as Blackbuck National Park, is located in the Bhal region of Saurashtra in Gujarat. It boasts a unique grassland ecosystem and is perhaps the only tropical grassland in India designated as a National Park. It is best known for its captivating blackbuck population, with these elegant creatures being endemic to India and Velavadar serving as one of their prime habitats. Established in 1976, the park is located around 42 km from the district headquarters city of Bhavnagar, adjoining the coasts of the Gulf of Khambhat on the south, it is spread over an area of 34.08 km2, which was primarily a “vidi” (grassland) of the maharaja of the princely state of Bhavnagar for hunting the blackbucks with his famous hunting cheetahs.

Kingdom of Blackbucks

The blackbucks, with their distinctive spiral horns and sleek, graceful bodies, move across the landscape in a harmonious dance. Smaller herds, consisting of just a few individuals, are often seen grazing peacefully, while larger herds create an impressive display of synchronized movement as they navigate the grasslands together.
Another star attraction of Velavadar, aside from the blackbucks, are the wolves and hyenas. These animals are typically rare to spot due to their shy behavior, dwindling populations, and nocturnal habits. However, Velavadar boasts a healthy population of both species, and they can sometimes be seen during the day strolling through the park. This provides photographers and wildlife enthusiasts with an excellent opportunity to observe and capture images of these elusive and typically nocturnal creatures in their natural habitat.
Velavadar grasslands serve as one of the largest roosting grounds for three species of migratory harriers: the Marsh Harrier, Pallid Harrier, and Montagu's Harrier. The congregation of harriers during the late evening hours is a major attraction of the park during the winter season.
